This shrine was built to honour three loyal subjects of Baekje: Seongchung, Heungsu and Gyebaek. Seongchung was a loyal minister under King Uija of Baekje (r. 641-660); serving as jwapyeong, a senior ministerial post, he strove to correct the king's misrule and died after going on a hunger strike in prison. When the allied forces of Silla and Tang China attacked in 660, the twentieth year of King Uija, Heungsu attempted to hold Tanhyeon Pass, but the other ministers opposed his strategy, the pass could not be held, and the kingdom ultimately fell. Gyebaek, facing the same invasion, selected a suicide squad of some 5,000 men and died fighting at Hwangsan, present-day Yeonsan. The shrine was first built in 1957 and rebuilt in 1981 to its present form. Every October, during the Baekje Cultural Festival, the Samchungje memorial rite is held here.
