This was a place where scholars from Seongju who had passed the state examinations gathered to honour the spirit of former sages and to encourage one another in their studies. It was first built outside Seongju's west gate in 1588, the twenty-first year of King Seonjo of Joseon, and was known as Samaso. After the building later collapsed, it was rebuilt at its present location in 1860, the eleventh year of King Cheoljong, and renamed Yeongyedang. Descendants of the various families whose ancestors had passed the examinations are said to have gathered here every year to study and debate. Even today, on the tenth day of the fourth lunar month, descendants of these families still gather here to commemorate the former sages. The hall measures four kan, or structural bays, across the front and two kan deep, with a gabled roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人 (person). Of the four bays, the central two form a wooden-floored hall, while the two on either side are ondol-heated rooms. The Yeongyesoyeonggeon Daily Record documents, day by day from start to finish, the construction work carried out when Yeongyedang was relocated and rebuilt, recording the purchase and prices of building materials and the numbers and provisions of the carpenters and labourers involved. It is a valuable source for the study of construction practices of the period.
