A stupa is a structure that symbolically represents a monk's grave, enshrining the deceased monk's remains or sari (relics). This stupa field at Myeongjusa Temple contains a total of twelve stupas, along with four stone monuments that have also survived. Of the twelve stupas, seven have a pagoda body and roof stone set upon a three-tiered platform; apart from the square base stone and the round pagoda body, each remaining part is octagonal. The other five have a bell-shaped pagoda body set upon a pedestal stone, topped with a large bud-shaped finial. The four monuments consist of a monument body erected on a low square base and topped with a roof stone. Originally scattered across several locations, they were all gathered and preserved at the present site in 1994.
