Dolmens are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also called goindol, and are known mainly as the graves of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. Dolmens in Korea are divided into the table type, in which four supporting stones are erected to form a stone chamber topped with a huge flat capstone, and the go-board type, in which a stone chamber is built underground with small supporting stones set beneath the capstone. South Jeolla Province has the greatest concentration of dolmens in the country, with more than about 20,000 found there to date. Many dolmens are also distributed throughout Wando County, including 23 dolmens arranged in two groups on Cheongsando Island. At Eumni, sixteen southern-type dolmens stand along the roadside east of Eumni village; they were disturbed by road construction more than twenty years ago, and today only three of the sixteen retain their original form. No. 1 is tilted slightly because its four supporting stones cannot bear the weight of the capstone; for No. 2, small stones were wedged between the capstone and the supporting stones to even out the height; and the surface of the capstone of No. 3, unlike the others, has been smoothly finished.
