Sacheon Hwandeongni Jo Clan Old House
사천환덕리조씨고가 · 泗川還德里趙氏古家

This house was built in 1895, the 32nd year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon, by Jo Yong-heon, the eleventh-generation descendant of the Deokgok branch of the Haman Jo clan. The main hall and the detached men's quarters, each with a straight, one-line floor plan, are arranged one behind the other, while a storehouse and a cattle shed stand at right angles on either side of the main hall, together forming an overall square, box-like layout. The main hall has a five-bay front, with the wooden-floored hall occupying two bays. A wall was built at the rear of this hall to create a space for storing items used in ancestral rites, clearly illustrating the tradition by which the central hall of a private house also served as a space for ancestral ceremonies. Because the buildings were arranged on sloping ground, the stone platforms beneath them were built high, and the house follows the typical form of a southern-region dwelling.
