Sayang Village School Lecture Hall
사양서당강당 · 泗陽書堂講堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site enshrines the spirit tablets of three scholars: Hangang Jeong Gu (1543–1620), Seokdam Lee Yun-u (1569–1634) and Songam Lee Won-gyeong (1525–1571). Jeong Gu was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period who held various posts and, in his later years, devoted himself to training younger scholars; he was learned in many fields and especially versed in ritual studies. It was built in 1651, the second year of King Hyojong of Joseon, in Susu-dong, Chilgok-myeon, enshrining Lee Yun-u alongside Jeong Gu. In 1694, the twentieth year of King Sukjong, it was moved to its present site and Lee Won-gyeong was additionally enshrined. It was later closed under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon, private Confucian academies, and all its buildings were lost except for the lecture hall, Gyeonghoedang, which survives today. Gyeonghoedang measures five bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person). The brackets supporting the roof eaves are carved in the ikgong style, in the shape of a bird's wing.
