Sancheong Namsa-ri Choe Clan Old House
산청남사리최씨고가 · 山淸南沙里崔氏古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the largest house at the centre of Namsa Village, built in the 1930s, with a main hall, cattle-shed wing, and detached men's quarters arranged around the main hall in an overall square, box-like layout. The main hall has a six-bay front and a three-bay side, with a hipped-and-gabled roof that, viewed from the side, takes the shape of the Chinese character for 'eight' (八). Because the rear veranda is wide, a built-in closet for storing household items was placed behind each room, and separate small rooms were made behind the kitchen and the room across the hall. The east-facing lower wing has a four-bay front and two-bay side, with a hip roof that appears trapezoidal when viewed from the front; it has an open wooden-floored hall on the south side, followed by a heated room. The storehouse wing has a four-bay front and two-bay side and faces west. The detached men's quarters has a five-bay front and two-and-a-half-bay side, with verandas at both front and rear. Two inner gates leading to the inner courtyard were made on either side of the men's quarters: passing through the east gate, the main hall comes fully into view, while the west gate is screened by an inward wall so that the cattle-shed wing and main hall are not directly visible. This house, with its excellent layout separating men's and women's spaces to give each area independence, offers a glimpse of the Confucian traditions of a scholar-gentry family.
