Woncheongunbyeon Naval Headquarters Pavilion

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a portrait of Byeon Su, Lord of Woncheon (1447–1524), a military official of the mid-Joseon period. Byeon Su served as military commissioner of Chungcheong and Hamgyeong provinces, and was enfeoffed as Lord of Woncheon for his contribution to the Jungjong Restoration, becoming a meritorious subject. Presumed to have been painted by a court painter of the Dohwaseo, the Royal Bureau of Painting, around the time he was named a meritorious subject, this full-length seated portrait is rendered in colour: he wears a samo, a black gauze official's cap, and a deep blue official robe, and sits in a chair gazing to the right. On his chest is an insignia badge bearing a crane-and-cloud design, and a side slit in the hem of his robe reveals a white undergarment beneath. His two feet are placed neatly side by side on a footstool. It is a typical Joseon-period portrait of a meritorious subject, though the face and cap have been damaged and appear to have been somewhat altered in later restoration.
