This Buddha statue is preserved together with a three-storey stone pagoda in the schoolyard of the Hyeonseo branch of Sangpyeong Elementary School, in Seorim-ri, Seo-myeon, Yangyang County, Gangwon State. It was found in a nearby rice paddy in 1965 and moved to its present location. The statue's head is missing, and the body is also badly damaged. From the gesture of the hands held before the chest, the right hand wrapping the index finger of the left, it can be identified as a depiction of the Vairocana Buddha. The octagonal pedestal, though partly missing, is very finely carved. On the base stone sits an octagonal lower pedestal stone made of four pieces, each face carved in relief with a lion. On the octagonal middle pedestal stone, pillar shapes are carved at each corner, with an incense burner and seven bodhisattva images placed between them. A separate octagonal stone was set on top of the middle pedestal stone, which appears originally to have served as a support beneath it. Such a separately made support beneath the middle pedestal stone is also found in pedestals of the mid-ninth century, such as those of the Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha at Biroam Hermitage, Donghwasa Temple (a treasure), and the Stone Seated Buddha of Cheongnyongsa Temple (a treasure). Around the statue, column foundation stones stand in a row, and a standing Medicine Buddha image found at the same site is now kept at the National Chuncheon Museum.
