This site contains seven steles commemorating seven men from Jangseong whose filial conduct and integrity made them models for the local community of scholars: Jeong Un-o (1542–1593), Chudam Kim U-geup (1574–1643), Jo Yeong-gyu (1535–1592), Cheosa Jo Jeong-ro (1559–1612) and his son, Choe Hak-ryeong (1512–?), and Agok Park Su-ryang (1491–1554). Originally, this was the site of Moam-jeongsa, a private academy where Seo Reung, posthumously honoured as Jeolhyogong and widely known as a filial son, taught during the reign of King Gojong of Goryeo (r. 1213–1259). In the 20th year of King Seonjo of Joseon (1587), local Confucian scholars, including the Jangseong magistrate Yi Gye and Hagok Jeong Won-o, built a shrine and lecture hall in tribute to Jeolhyogong's filial conduct and virtue, founding Moam Seowon academy. However, the academy was entirely destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598, and was rebuilt by local scholars in 1649. After the academy was abolished in 1868 under Heungseon Daewongun's order closing seowon academies nationwide, an altar was set up on its former site, where memorial rites were held each spring and autumn; since 1933 the spirit tablets of the seven worthies once enshrined at Moam Seowon have been gathered in one place and honoured together.
