Jukjeongchoeyugyeong Burial Ground
죽정최유경묘역 · 竹亭崔有慶墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the burial ground of Choe Yu-gyeong (崔有慶, 1343-1413), a civil official active from the late Goryeo to early Joseon period and a meritorious subject of the Joseon founding. He assisted Yi Seong-gye in founding Joseon and was honoured as a Gaeguk Wonjong Gongsin (開國原從功臣), a meritorious subject of the second rank for the dynasty's founding. Choe Yu-gyeong's tomb lies within the burial ground of the Jeonju Choe clan. From the top, the graves are arranged as follows: Choe Yu-gyeong, his son Choe Sa-gang (崔士康), and his eighth-generation descendant Choe No-cheom (崔魯瞻); on the surrounding ridges are also the graves of his sons Choe Sa-wi (崔士威) and Choe Sa-gyu (崔士規). Choe Yu-gyeong's grave takes the form of ssangbun (雙墳, twin mounds), buried together with his wife, Lady Yi of Goseong (固城李氏); it is said that the grave of Lady Kim, Lady of Sangnak-gun (上洛郡夫人金氏), was recently added by joint burial. The mound is rectangular, typical of the late Goryeo period, with a border stone built around its base for protection. The burial ground rises in terraces, divided into three tiers bordered by gyecheseok (階砌石, long flat boundary stones marking off the grounds), and preserves well the funerary layout of the early Joseon period. In front of each mound stands a myopyo (墓表), a tombstone inscribed with the name of the deceased. All the tombstones are small in scale and in the wonsubangbu (圓首方趺) form, with a rounded capstone and a square base. Choe Yu-gyeong's tombstone was made in 1674, and that of Lady Yi of Goseong in 1439. On the middle tier stands a single jangmyeongdeung (stone lantern) in the style of the early Joseon period, unusual in having a light-window pierced only on the east side. Two pairs of stone civil officials (munseogin) were erected in all, reflecting the funerary practice of twin-mound burials in the early Joseon period. Both are in the bokdugongbok (幞頭公服) form, wearing a bokdu headpiece and gongbok official robes, in the simple, column-like style of stone figures of the early Joseon period. Now rare as an intact early Joseon-period burial ground, this site preserves well the original form of its funerary structure and stone objects, giving it great value as a cultural heritage site.
