Deoksansa Temple
덕산사 · 德山祠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDeoksansa is a shrine dedicated to General Oh Yeon-chong, posthumously titled Munyang-gong, who won great merit suppressing the Jurchen during the reign of King Yejong of Goryeo. In 1928 his descendants brought his portrait from Jeongbuksa, in Gyeongseong, North Hamgyong Province, to this site and built the shrine here. Jeongbuksa, which had enshrined General Oh Yeon-chong, was a shrine built in 1437, the nineteenth year of King Sejong's reign, to hold memorial rites for Generals Yun Gwan, Oh Yeon-chong, Kim Jong-seo and Oh Bak, who had driven the Jurchen from the Hamgyong region. It was torn down under the rule of the Heungseon Daewongun and rebuilt in 1904. The memorial rites for General Oh Yeon-chong, however, were later moved by his descendants to Gokseong, and have been held here since Deoksansa was built in 1928. General Oh Yeon-chong was a Goryeo civil official who, after passing the state examination, held a succession of posts including Minister of War. In 1107, the second year of King Yejong's reign, he won merit alongside Yun Gwan in subduing the Jurchen and was appointed Sangseo-jwabogya and Chamjijeongsa. He was subsequently appointed Susagong-jungseosirang-pyeongjangsa, and after serving as Susado-sutaewi-gamsuguksa-sangjuguk, he served as minister of the Ministries of Personnel, Rites and War. Deoksansa is a gable-roofed building three bays wide and two bays deep.
