Cheongamsa Temple was founded by the monk Doseon in 859, the third year of King Heonan's reign in Unified Silla. It was rebuilt several times during the Joseon period but was destroyed by fire in 1911. It was rebuilt over the following three years, and the present Daeungjeon Hall dates from this reconstruction. The hall is three bays wide and two bays deep, its roof built in the hip-and-gable style, which from the side takes the shape of the Chinese character 八 (eight). Inside are a wooden seated statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni, together with several Buddhist paintings, or taenghwa — a painting hung behind the main Buddha, and paintings of the mountain spirit, the assembly of guardian deities, the Seven Stars, and the Lone Sage — as well as a small bell and an embroidered banner.
