Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBeside a national highway in the village of Yeokdun-ri, Samcheok, stands a stele pavilion called Geumokgak, which houses these two iron steles. One commemorates the gratitude felt for Magistrate Yi Gyu-heon of Samcheok and his benevolent rule, raised to honour him forever; the other was erected so that the contributions of the local residents who helped put up the first stele would not be forgotten. Yi Gyu-heon took up his post as Magistrate of Samcheok in 1835, the first year of King Heonjong, and served until 1839, governing benevolently on behalf of the people of the region. In particular, when the people faced starvation from drought and flooding in 1837, the third year of King Heonjong, he distributed grain from the Yeokdun granary and saved a great many lives. Both of the two iron steles have a body and a capstone, with inscriptions and patterns carved in relief only on their front faces. The stele for Magistrate Yi Gyu-heon was erected in 1838, the fourth year of King Heonjong, and the stele beside it honouring the residents was erected the following year.
