Dongsa-ri Stone Pagoda
동사리석탑 · 東寺里石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda now stands at Buyeo National Museum; a stone marker has been erected at its original site to indicate its former location. Its form consists of a two-tiered base supporting the whole structure, above which rises a five-storey body. On each of the four faces of the lower base, three ogival niches are shallowly carved as decoration. The upper base carries a lotus-petal border around its top edge, with a projecting floral carving at each of the four corners. The corners of the body stones are carved to resemble pillars, but from the second storey the height decreases sharply, creating a marked contrast with the bulk of the first storey. The roof stones curve downward along their sloping surfaces, with the eaves curling gently upward at the four corners, and each underside is carved with three tiers of supports. The finial at the top is a later reconstruction. Because the body storeys decrease so sharply in height going upward, the pagoda gives an overall slender, elongated impression. Built in the Goryeo period, it faithfully preserves the stone pagoda style popular at the time.
