This is a seowon, a Confucian academy, founded to honour Kim Jong-jik, Kim Goeng-pil, Jeong Yeo-chang, Kim Il-son, and Jeong Yeo-hae. Kim Jong-jik (1431–1492) was an early Joseon civil official who excelled at writing from a young age and produced many works; among them, his essay "Jouijemun," which used a Chinese historical allusion to criticise King Sejo for deposing King Danjong and seizing the throne, became the pretext for the Muo sahwa, the purge of 1498. His Neo-Confucian learning, which carried on the scholarly lineage of Jeong Mong-ju and Gilje, was passed down through his disciples and became the mainstream of Joseon Neo-Confucian thought, which prized moral integrity and loyalty. Kim Goeng-pil (1454–1504), Jeong Yeo-chang (1450–1504), and Kim Il-son (1464–1498), like Jeong Yeo-hae, were disciples of Kim Jong-jik, but they were put to death in the Muo sahwa of 1498 (the fourth year of Yeonsangun) and the Gapja sahwa of 1504 (the tenth year of Yeonsangun). Haemangseowon was founded in 1508, the third year of King Jungjong, by Jeong Yeo-hae to console the spirits of his teacher Kim Jong-jik and these fellow disciples. After Jeong Yeo-hae's death the academy fell into neglect, until local Confucian scholars enshrined his spirit tablet there as well in 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong, and rebuilt it in its present form in 1934. The academy grounds contain buildings such as Sunguisa Shrine, Guindang Hall, and the inner and outer three-bay gates. Sunguisa Shrine measures three kan (a kan being a traditional unit of bay spacing) across the front and one kan at the side, with a gabled roof shaped, in side view, like the character 人 (person). Inside, the spirit tablet of Kim Jong-jik is enshrined centrally, flanked by those of Kim Goeng-pil, Jeong Yeo-chang, Kim Il-son, and Jeong Yeo-hae, and a memorial rite is held every year on 15 September. Guindang, the lecture hall, measures four kan across the front and three kan at the side, with a hipped-and-gabled roof shaped, in side view, like the character 八 (eight).
