Yi Clan Old House in Dongho-ri, Geochang
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This house was built in 1810, the tenth year of King Sunjo of Joseon, by Yi Jin-ak, and was named Dongho-jae after the pen name of his grandfather, Yi Ji-yu. The complex consists of a gate quarters, a men's quarters, a middle gate quarters, a women's quarters, a storehouse, and a stable. The women's quarters measures five and a half bays across the front and two bays to the side, comprising one kitchen bay, one main-room bay, two bays of wooden-floored hall, one side-room bay, and a half-bay-wide floor. An open, half-bay-wide veranda runs along the front of the rooms and the hall, while at the rear a half-bay-wide built-in closet and veranda are attached. The men's quarters measures three bays at the front and three at the back; the front three bays form an open wooden floor, while the rear three contain rooms. The centre room projects slightly forward, so that the front floor is only half a bay wide for its single central bay. Built to suit practical, everyday living rather than following a fixed formal arrangement, the house well illustrates the characteristics of a traditional dwelling of the southern region.
