삼척산양서원묘정비 · 三陟山陽書院廟庭碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA myojeongbi is a stele set up in front of a seowon (Confucian academy), inscribed with text explaining the circumstances of the academy's founding and praising the figure enshrined there. The Sanyangseowon Academy where this stele stands is a shrine built to honour Hwang Hui (1363–1452). Hwang Hui, renowned as an able chief minister under King Sejong of Joseon, was appointed governor of Gangwon Province in 1423, the fifth year of King Sejong. A famine struck at that time, and after touring the various districts he is said to have distributed grain to relieve the starving people. In gratitude for this kindness, the people of the Samcheok region are said to have piled up stones to build a platform, naming it 'Sogongdae'. Sogongdae later fell into ruin, and a commemorative stele was erected on the site. In 1824, the twenty-fourth year of King Sunjo, Sodongsa Shrine was built in several places to begin enshrining Hwang Hui, and this later developed into Sanyangseowon Academy.
