Gapyeong Hyeondeungsa Temple Ksitigarbha Sip King Painting
가평현등사지장십왕도 · 加平懸燈寺地藏十王圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMeasuring 212.5 cm wide and 151 cm high, the painting depicts Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva seated in the half-cross-legged position on a tall central pedestal, his feet resting on a pink lotus bud. He is surrounded by a double circular halo, his right hand raised to shoulder height and his left hand lowered to his knee, holding the hem of his robe. Below the bodhisattva's knees, to left and right, the Ten Kings of the Underworld are arranged five on each side, centred on the Venerable Domyeong and King Mudok; to the right of the Ten Kings stand attendant figures such as the judges, the ox-headed and horse-headed guardians, and the boy attendants of good and evil. King Mudok holds his palms together in prayer, while the Venerable Domyeong holds a seokjang, a monk's ringed staff. The painting originally hung, together with a Vajra Guardian Painting, on either side of the Amitabha Assembly Painting in Geungnakjeon Hall, and is now enshrined behind the bronze seated image of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in Jijangjeon Hall. The inscription recording its production has been cut away, but according to the temple's inventory of holdings, it appears to have been made in 1759, the same year as the Amitabha Assembly Painting.
