Stone Buldu in Pyeongjang-ri, Wonju
원주 평장리 석조불두 · 原州 平庄里 石造佛頭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOn a large granite boulder beside the road in Gyohang-ri, Socho-myeon, Wonju, Gangwon State, sits only the head of a Buddha image. Legend holds that it was made to repel Japanese soldiers during the Japanese invasions of 1592. Originally it stood on a rock face atop a hill marking the boundary between Pyeongjang-ri and Gyohang-ri, where the body of the Buddha had been carved and only the head placed on top. When the road was widened, only the head was moved to its present location. The carving technique is unsophisticated overall, but it nonetheless conveys the form of the Buddha well, and on the basis of the carving style of its various parts, it is thought to date from the early Goryeo period.
