A stupa is a structure symbolising a monk's grave, built to enshrine his remains or sari (relics). These two stupas, standing in the rear yard of Sangiam Hermitage, each enshrine the sari of a monk bearing the sobriquet 'Haewoldang' or 'Dugokdang'. The Haewoldang stupa consists of a single-stone, three-tiered pedestal supporting a jar-shaped body stone, topped with a roof stone. The pedestal bears an unrefined lotus pattern, and the eight corners of the roof stone curve slightly upward. At the top sits a finial in the shape of a flower bud, its base now broken. The Dugokdang stupa has a bell-shaped body stone set on an octagonal pedestal, topped with a flower-bud-shaped finial; the body stone is decorated with vine patterns above and below. The dates when the two stupas were erected remain unknown.
