Sangwonsa Temple was founded in 546, the 24th year of King Seong of Baekje, by the monks Gobong and Balyong. It was rebuilt in 942, the 25th year of King Taejo of Goryeo, by a man named Eunjang, and has since been repaired and rebuilt on several occasions, most recently up to 1947, bringing it to its present form. The Daeungjeon Hall itself appears to have been built around the reign of King Yeongjo of Joseon (r. 1724-1776). The hall measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a gabled roof (matbae roof) that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the Chinese character for "person" (人). Inside are enshrined statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha and Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, together with a hubul taenghwa (a painting hung behind the main Buddha images), a Jijang taenghwa (a painting of the bodhisattva Kshitigarbha) and a Sinjung taenghwa (a painting of guardian deities).
