This pavilion was built after King Heonjong of Joseon (r. 1834–1849), wishing to honour the Jinju Ha clan for generations of exemplary loyalty and filial devotion, bestowed the pen name 'Uncho-jae' on Ha Jun-ho, a man noted for his scholarship and filial piety, and had it carved onto a wooden plaque. Eopilgak means a pavilion housing calligraphy written personally by the king. In addition to the wooden plaque bearing the king's own calligraphy, the pavilion preserves wooden plaques carved with the preface to Uncho-jae, written by Jeon Byeong-guk, the Chief State Councillor at the time, and the Eopilgangmyeongbyeonggi, written by Sin Eung-jo.
