Stone Gwibu in Muyang-dong, Sangju
상주 무양동 석조귀부 · 尙州 武陽洞 石造龜趺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a pedestal that once supported a stone stele, carved in the shape of a turtle (gwibu). It gives an overall gentle impression, with the head pressed close to the back and the gaze turned upward. The scales on the neck and the pattern on the shell are not rendered, giving the piece a simplified appearance. At the centre of the back there is a square groove for holding the stele, decorated around it with a lotus design. The carving technique and style in each part resemble those of the stele at King Taejo of Joseon's Heolleung Royal Tomb, the stele of State Preceptor Doseon at Dogapsa Temple in Yeongam, and the Samjeondo Stele, so it is presumed to be a work of the early Joseon period. It originally stood at Biseokgeori (Stele Street) in Muyang-ri, on the road connecting Sangju to Seoul, and was later moved to its present location; the heritage item is named after this old place name.
