Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeong Hyeon (pen name Yongjae, 1439–1504) belonged to the Changnyeong Seong clan and bore the courtesy name Gyeongsuk. His pen names included Yongjae, Buhyuja and Heobaekdang, and his posthumous title was Mundae. Gifted with literary talent, he travelled to Ming China as an envoy on several occasions, writing travel records of these missions; when Ming envoys later visited Joseon he exchanged poems with them, winning their admiration. He also compiled the music of his time into the Akhak gwebeom (Guide to the Study of Music), and in 1504 wrote the Yongjae chonghwa (Assorted Writings of Yongjae); his collected works survive as the Heobaekdangjip. Seong Hyeon's grave is arranged as a pair of mounds alongside that of his wife, Lady Yi of the Hansan Yi clan. Civil and military official stone figures were originally placed together at the grave, but the military figure was stolen in 2006. At present only the civil official figure dates from the 16th century; the offering table, incense-burner stone, and grave tablet (erected in 1992) are all recent additions.
