This is the grave of Bak Geol-nam, courtesy name Sajeong, pen name Uiam. He is said to have been strong and talented from a young age. According to the Samcheok-gunji (Gazetteer of Samcheok County), during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598) he served as a righteous army commander under Yi Sun-sin, Lord Chungmu, and achieved great merit; in recognition, the court granted him the honour of Seonmuwonjonggongsin, Second Class, and he is said to have risen to Minister of War. The Milseong Bak clan genealogy shows that he returned to his hometown in 1598, the 31st year of King Seonjo, and died in 1603, the 36th year of King Seonjo. However, the collected writings of Oh Geuk-seong, who served alongside him during the invasions, suggest he was in fact a military official active in the Gyeongsang-do region.
