This house was built in 1770, the forty-sixth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, by Jeong Jae-no, younger brother of Jeong Jong-ro. Only the sarangchae (men's quarters) originally remained; the anchae (women's quarters) was rebuilt 80 years ago and the byeolchae (detached quarters) was rebuilt 70 years ago, so that the house now consists of an anchae, a sarangchae and a byeolchae. The anchae has a single-row (il-shaped) floor plan six kan wide across the front. Except for the one-kan kitchen on the left, a half-kan-wide toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda) runs along both front and back. The sarangchae is arranged with several interconnecting rooms forming one open space and two kan of wooden-floored rooms. The byeolchae has an il-shaped floor plan, with a half-kan-wide toenmaru running the full length of the building in front of its rooms. The floor plan of Byeongam is unusual in that, apart from the kitchen having been converted into a storeroom, it shows the same room arrangement as the anchae of houses in the southern regions.
