Geumdolseong Fortress

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis fortress was built along the ridges and valleys near the summit of Baekhwasan Mountain, and is said to be the site where General Kim Yu-sin of Silla fought a fierce battle against Baekje forces. The fortress had completely collapsed, but in 1978, as part of a project to repair national defence heritage sites, 80 m of the fortress wall was restored. The collapsed wall had been built to a width of about 4 m, and its total circumference is 2–3 km. Along the section of wall descending into the valley, only the lower portion, about 30 cm high, survives. The restored wall has a base 360 cm wide; at a height of about 150 cm a platform was built on which soldiers could stand and move about, and above that a further section of wall, 125 cm wide at the bottom and 85 cm wide at the top, was raised to a height of 150 cm. Historically and geographically, the fortress stands where the powers of Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla clashed with one another, and it is an important site for understanding the historical circumstances of the Three Kingdoms period.
