Yanggu Coast Seonsa Site, located in Mandae-ri, Haean-myeon, Yanggu County, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, is a rare site where artefacts from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age have been found together in one place. To the north of the site, Haean-cheon Stream, which rises on Dosolsan Mountain, flows eastward and then southeast, joining Seonghwang-cheon Stream below Seonghwanggyo Bridge and meeting Seohwa-cheon Stream in Seohwa-myeon, Inje County. The site lies south of Haean-cheon Stream and broadly consists of hilly terrain and the flat land to its north. Continuous land reclamation in the hill area has gradually destroyed the topsoil layer. Trees now planted there have, in the process of planting, destroyed some of the archaeological features; in particular, it has been confirmed that one dwelling site was completely destroyed recently when a field beside a small road to the east was reclaimed. It has also been confirmed that much of the site below the hill was further damaged during embankment construction in 2001–2002. Artefacts dating from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age have been found in this area, including small iron knives, round clay-stripe-rim pottery, jars with composite horn-shaped handles, and Jeulmun (comb-pattern) pottery. The Yanggu Coast site is notable in particular for its concentrated finds of round clay-stripe-rim pottery and jars with composite horn-shaped handles, making it an important source of evidence for the transmission of Iron Age culture into the central region of Korea.
