An eupseong is a walled town built to protect the people of a county or district while serving military and administrative functions together. Biineupseong, in Seongnae-ri, Biin-myeon, Seocheon-gun, South Chungcheong Province, encircles an entire town, with gates set at intervals to connect it with the world outside. According to the Dongguk yeoji seungnam, in 1421, the third year of King Sejong, the earthen wall built in the mid-Goryeo period was rebuilt in stone to defend against raids by Japanese pirates. The wall is about 2m high and roughly 3,000m long; today only its outline survives, most of it having been damaged.
