An eupseong is a walled town built to enclose the seat of a county or district, in order to protect its residents and to perform military and administrative functions. According to the Newly Augmented Dongguk yeoji seungnam, Hansaneupseong was a stone-built wall with a circumference of 4,070 cheok (1,233 m) and a height of 11 cheok (3 m), and inside the wall there were one ditch and four wells. The wall now surviving has a circumference of 1,820 m, and in plan it forms a trapezoid in which the west wall is longer than the east wall. The west and north walls were built of stone, the south wall of earth, and the east wall of a mixture of earth and stone. Apart from the section of the south wall cut through by the local road between Seocheon and Hansan, most of the remaining wall retains its original form well. It is thought that the wall was built in the mid-Goryeo period to protect the local people safely, after Japanese pirates repeatedly invaded along the river.
