Seated Yeongeunsa Temple Stone Buddha
영은사석불좌상 · 靈隱寺石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGeumhyeon-ri in Goseo-myeon, Damyang County, South Jeolla Province, was originally the site of Yeongeunsa Temple; in 1976 the site was cleared and the temple rebuilt. Two stone Buddhas that had been lying fallen on the old temple site were raised and enshrined in the main hall. Today, at the centre of the hall stands a seated stone Buddha with a halo, designated a Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage, beside which this Buddha sits facing to the right. The neck, which had broken off, has been reattached with cement, and the low, topknot-shaped hair bun rising from the bald head has also been partially damaged. The face, too, is considerably worn, so that fine carving detail can no longer be seen, but the eyes, nose and mouth are realistically carved, giving a well-rounded appearance. The Buddha wears a robe covering only the left shoulder, with a few parallel folds falling from the left shoulder and rendered at the waist and knees. The right hand points downward towards the ground, while the left hand rests on the knee. Although the damage to the neck has left the original form incomplete, the quiet, contemplative expression of the face and the soft, voluminous curves of the shoulders are notable. It is presumed to date from the early Goryeo period.
