Yi Jong-rin (1538–1611), Prince Pungsan, was a grandson of King Jungjong of Joseon and the son of Yi Gi, Prince Deokyang. During the Japanese invasions of Korea (the Imjin War), he accompanied King Seonjo's royal carriage in flight. He later oversaw the affairs of the Office of Royal Clan Affairs (Jongchinbu) while holding the rank of Sodeokdaebu (senior first rank), and after his death was posthumously advanced to the rank of Hyeollokdaebu. The tomb of Prince Pungsan is a joint burial with his wife, Park of the Naju clan, who held the title Lady of Geumwon County. The burial mound is encircled by an octagonal stone border, the stones set atop a base stone — a form that differs from early Joseon practice. The tombstone in front of the mound is of the round-topped-stele-on-square-base type. Before the tombstone stand a spirit-resting stone, an offering table, an incense-burner stone, a pair of guardian pillars, and stone statues of civil officials. Given Prince Pungsan's standing at the time, these stone furnishings were made in a deliberately modest form, and no sindobi — a large stele customarily erected along the spirit path to a tomb — was built for him. His son, Yi Su, Prince Gwicheon, explained that "my late father disliked outward ornamentation and detested acting under an undeserved reputation," which is why only a brief epitaph, rather than a spirit-road stele, was composed for him — reflecting this same conviction.
