속초매곡오윤환선생생가

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the birthplace of O Yun-hwan, pen name Maegok (1872–1946), a Confucian scholar of the Sokcho area. The house is an L-shaped, Hamgyong-style double-row dwelling four bays wide at the front and two bays deep. The front of the main building has a meoreumdae, a low board set beneath the window sill, and single-row rooms extend from the rear of the inner quarters. The back yard contains an extended storehouse and shed. The stable walls are built of wooden planking, and its roof descends low in a sloping extension from the roof of the main building. The inner room was occupied by the grandmother and the upper room by the mother-in-law; the upper room has a wooden veranda opening onto the rear garden so that one could stroll there. The men's quarters were used by the grandfather and the upper men's room by the grandson, while the rear room was used by the daughter-in-law and the upper rear room served as space for the daughters.
