Ocheon, the site of this school, was where the naval garrison of the Chungcheong-do Naval Commander was stationed during the Joseon period, but the garrison was abolished in 1895, and Ocheon-gun County was newly established in 1901. At the same time that Ocheon-gun was created, the local Confucian scholars wanted the town to have its own hyanggyo, a local Confucian school, but circumstances did not allow it; they laid the groundwork for the school with only the minimal ritual implements and facilities needed for simple ancestral rites. Then, in 1905, through the efforts of the Confucian scholars, who donated land, and with the help of the county magistrate, the Daeseongjeon Hall was completed, giving the school its proper form, and it has continued ever since to promote the Confucian tradition of learning in the town. Ocheonhyanggyo thus has the shortest history of any hyanggyo in Korea, and although small in scale, it is equipped with the Daeseongjeon Hall together with the Dongmu, the eastern wing building, the Gangnyundang lecture hall, and the main gate, in a layout rarely seen elsewhere, with the lecture hall to the left and the shrine to the rear.
