In 1472, the third year of King Seongjong's reign, Kim Goeng-pil (1454–1504) devoted himself to reading and self-cultivation in his youth at Hanhwondang. After the Hanhwondang building was destroyed by fire, a shrine and Sohakdang Hall were built in 1506, the first year of King Jungjong's reign, to commemorate Kim Goeng-pil and Jeong Yeo-chang (1450–1504). These were burned down again in 1696, the twenty-second year of King Sukjong's reign, and were rebuilt, remaining in their present form today. Kim Goeng-pil was a civil official and scholar of the early Joseon period. He inherited the orthodox lineage of Korean Confucian learning that passed from Jeong Mong-ju through Gil Jae and Kim Suk-ja to Kim Jong-jik, and later formed the core of the Giho faction of the Sarim (literati) scholars, who went on to lead reform politics. He died in 1504, the tenth year of Yeonsangun's reign, during the Gapja sahwa (a purge of literati officials), and was posthumously appointed State Councillor of the Right under King Jungjong (r. 1506–1544). Jeong Yeo-chang was also a civil official and scholar of the early Joseon period. While serving as magistrate of Aneum County in 1495, the first year of Yeonsangun's reign, his clean government earned him praise from the people. He was exiled in 1498, the fourth year of Yeonsangun's reign, during the Muo sahwa (another purge of literati officials), and was posthumously appointed State Councillor of the Right under King Jungjong. Sohakdang Hall is four bays wide and two bays deep, with a gabled roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. A river runs along the right side of the grounds, giving the site fine surroundings and scenery suited to study by scholars of old and learning by later students. To the left of the building stands Hoesansa Shrine, which enshrines the spirit tablets of the founding ancestors of the Byeokjin Yi, Andong Gwon, and Suncheon Bak clans.
