Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Pocheon Andong Kim Clan Old House Site is a building site facing southeast, with the Yeongpyeongcheon Stream flowing from east to west to its southwest and gently sloping hills to the north. It is the former location of the old house of the Andong Kim clan, who resided in the Pocheon region during the Joseon period. The head house building was destroyed by fire during the Korean War, and afterwards the descendants are said to have roughly cleared the site, built a house and other structures on it, and cultivated the surrounding land as farmland. An excavation in 2004 uncovered the remains of a building complex comprising the main hall, a middle gate and storeroom, an elevated gate (soldaemun, a tall gate denoting high status), a servants' quarters, and a men's quarters (sarangchae). Only the southern and western parts of the platform and the foundation stones remain at the main hall site, making it difficult to determine the building's exact scale. A total of eight foundation stones were identified, most of them to the north. The foundation stones and platform stones of the middle gate and storeroom site survive well, allowing the scale of the building to be determined; the platform currently stands one tier high on the north and south and two tiers high on the west. A total of nine foundation stones were identified, and stone-packed postholes (jeoksim), which supported pillars where no foundation stone remained, were also confirmed. From 2008 to 2010 the main hall, men's quarters, and gate quarters were newly rebuilt based on an estimate of their original appearance, and the site remains in this form today. The origins of the Pocheon Andong Kim Clan Old House Site cannot be clearly established. However, the surviving remains are valuable in that they allow the appearance of a late Joseon yangban (noble) house, of which few examples survive north of the Hangang River, to be inferred.
