Hwaamseowon was established in 1610, the second year of King Gwanghaegun's reign, on the initiative of Jeong Yeop, Governor of Chungcheong Province, and Gu Gye-u, a disciple of Yi Ji-ham. It received a royal charter naming it Hwaamseowon in 1686, the 12th year of King Sukjong. It was abolished in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, under Heungseon Daewongun's order closing seowon academies nationwide, then restored in 1922. With the construction of Cheongcheon Reservoir, it was moved to its present site in 1959. It originally enshrined Tojeong Yi Ji-ham and Myeonggok Yi San-bo. Cheonhyudang Yi Mong-gyu was added in 1723, Toeudang Yi Jeong-am during the reign of Emperor Gojong, and Suam Gu Gye-u in 1971, bringing the number of enshrined tablets to five. In 1988 a portrait of Yi Ji-ham was enshrined, and local Confucian scholars hold memorial rites there every spring and autumn. The academy stands on a two-tiered site: the east and west dormitories, the lecture hall and the management building stand at the front, with the shrine behind — a hall-in-front, shrine-behind (jeonhak-humyo) layout.
