Yongyeonsa Temple is a branch temple of Woljeongsa Temple, head temple of the Fourth Diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It is said to have been founded in 1650, during the reign of King Injo, by the monk Okjam; according to another account, it was founded by the Great Master Wangchim at Manwolsan Mountain in Yongyeon-dong, east of Eungbongsan Mountain. The temple burned down entirely during the Korean War in 1950 and was later rebuilt through the efforts of a nun. Because it goes unmentioned in Joseon-period texts such as the Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam (Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea) and the Yeoji Doseo (Illustrated Gazetteer), its exact date of founding and early history cannot be confirmed. However, the temple entry of the Gangneung district gazetteer Jeungsu Imyeongji records: "Yongyeonsa Temple stands thirty li and twenty gan north of the district seat... the monk Okjam is said to have first built this temple here," indicating that the monk Okjam first established the temple around the Shunzhi era, roughly 1644. This stone pagoda was erected during the Joseon period. It appears to have originally been one of a pair of twin pagodas which later collapsed and scattered; the surviving components were subsequently gathered from the surrounding area and reassembled into the single pagoda seen today.
