Sincheonseowon is a Confucian academy built to honour the legacy of Maengam Kim Yeong-nyeol (?–1404) and to educate his descendants. Kim Yeong-nyeol was a military official of the early Joseon period. In 1400, the second year of King Jeongjong, he helped suppress the Second Strife of Princes and place King Taejong on the throne, and for this merit he was named a third-class Ikdae Jwamyeong Merit Subject in 1401, the first year of King Taejong. In 1404, the fourth year of King Taejong, while serving as Vice Minister of the Seungchu Bureau, he fought and captured a Japanese ship and took Japanese soldiers prisoner. He was later posthumously awarded the honorary post of State Councillor of the Right. Sincheonseowon was built in 1945 and faces south, set among a pine forest overlooking the Wangsin Plain. Within the academy stand Gyeonghunsa, the shrine used for ancestral rites, the lecture hall used for education, the Namdeokmun gate, and an entrance gate, while outside stands a spirit-road stele. The shrine, Gyeonghunsa, houses a danseo, a document written in red ink, bearing King Taejong's own calligraphy, together with a portrait of Kim Yeong-nyeol. Only the shrine, measuring three bays across the front and one bay deep, and the lecture hall, measuring four bays across the front and two bays deep, are designated as Gyeongsangbuk-do cultural heritage material; the buildings embody the refined elegance characteristic of the Yeongnam region.
