Heungdongjanghakdang was built in 1931 by ninety-six members of the Heungdong Scholarship Society, including Geunchon Baek Gwan-su and Baek Nak-yun, for anti-Japanese activities such as raising independence funds to send to the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai and training capable people. The Heungdong Scholarship Society itself had been formed in 1914 by Geunchon Baek Gwan-su together with relatives including Baek Nak-yun for the anti-Japanese independence struggle, recruiting 82 members from Seongnae-myeon and 14 members from other areas, including Seoul. The society led the independence manse demonstrations in the Gochang region, delivered funds to the Provisional Government in Shanghai, and used money contributed by its members to support the founding of Seongnae Elementary School and Gochang High School, promoting national education and scholarship that inspired anti-Japanese independence spirit. The hall itself measures six bays across the front and three bays deep, topped with a hip-and-gable roof (paljakjibung) that forms the shape of the character 八 ("eight") when viewed from the side. As a base of the independence movement centred on the Heungdong Scholarship Society and as a site of national education, it holds historical significance, and the building itself conveys a dignified, orderly character, retaining relatively traditional construction techniques intact. On 18 July 2014, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs designated it a Grade A memorial historic site.
