Nobongseowon Confucian Academy
노봉서원 · 魯峯書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Confucian academy built to emulate the integrity of Jungnim Gwon San-hae (?–1456), who upheld his loyalty to "not serve two kings" (不事二君) and died for his principles during the reign of King Danjong of Joseon (r. 1452–1468), and to cultivate future generations. Gwon San-hae was a righteous man of the early Joseon period. In 1455, the first year of King Sejo, when Grand Prince Suyang seized King Danjong's throne, Gwon San-hae refused to serve two kings and retired to his hometown. He later joined the Sayuksin, the Six Martyred Ministers, in plotting to restore King Danjong to the throne, but the plan failed and he died for his cause. Nobongseowon was established in 1794, the 18th year of King Jeongjo, but was closed in 1866, the third year of Emperor Gojong, under the order abolishing Confucian academies, and was rebuilt in 1921 with the support of local Confucian scholars. It forms a single compound of five buildings, including a lecture hall measuring five bays across the front and one and a half bays deep, and enshrines the spirit tablet of Jungnim Gwon San-hae.
