Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYongsanseowon Academy was founded in 1705, the thirty-first year of King Sukjong of Joseon, by Yi Se-pil, magistrate of Samcheok, as a centre of Confucian learning, and it was repaired on several occasions afterwards. It was abolished in 1865, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under the edict of the Regent (Daewongun) ordering the closure of private Confucian academies. In 1966, regarding it as an academy of long standing in the region, local Confucian scholars (sarim) built the present buildings. The books and documents held at Donghae Yongsanseowon Academy set out the regulations governing the academy's operation, and are valuable source material for research into the social and educational history of the Samcheok region in the eighteenth century. Seowon academies were the principal institutions of Confucian culture in the Joseon dynasty: they not only advanced the development of Neo-Confucian scholarship but were also leading educational institutions that did much to train local talent and raise the cultural standard of their regions. The manuscripts and old documents produced in the course of running the academy are a rich store of records that clearly show the function and role played by such academies, offering a narrow-focus history through which the wider background of local history can be gauged.
