Oksanseowon Confucian Academy
옥산서원 · 玉山書院

Oksanseowon Confucian Academy was built to commemorate and carry on the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Kim Nam-sik (pen name Uichon), Kim Yi-seong (pen name Sieun) and Kim Seong-eun (pen name Inilheong). Kim Nam-sik was a disciple of Kim Jip. On hearing news of the humiliating peace treaty concluded with Qing China during the Manchu invasion of 1636 (Byeongja Horan), he wept bitterly and returned home, settling at the foot of Gyeryeongsan Mountain, where he named his house Daemyeongyugye, meaning roughly 'a retreat that keeps faith with the Ming'. Kim Yi-seong, the son of Kim Nam-sik, was a disciple of Song Si-yeol and is said to have been deeply filial. Kim Seong-eun, the great-grandson of Kim Yi-seong, studied under Hwang Ui-chan and wrote, among other works, the Dongguk Munheollok. Oksanseowon is divided broadly into three areas. In the central area, the shrine, the inner three-bay gate and the lecture hall, Oksanjeongsa, are arranged in a single line, with the caretaker's quarters to the east of the lecture hall. To the south-west of the lecture hall stand the portrait shrine of Inilheong and the Samgangmun Gate, each enclosed by its own three-bay gate and wall to form a separate area. The shrine was rebuilt in 1956; it enshrines Kim Nam-sik at the centre, with Kim Yi-seong and Kim Seong-eun on either side. It measures three bays across the front and three bays to the side, with a gabled roof that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when seen from the side. The lecture hall, Oksanjeongsa, was rebuilt in 1786, the tenth year of King Jeongjo, and restored again in 1987. It measures six bays across the front and three bays to the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the character 八 (eight) when seen from the side. The portrait shrine of Inilheong measures three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a gabled roof. The Samgangmun Gate was rebuilt in 1948 in the form of a pavilion measuring three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a hip-and-gable roof.
