Community Compact Hall, Suncheon
순천 향약재 · 順天 鄕約齋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis hall was built by a village hyangyakgye, a mutual-aid society combining the Chinese community-compact system known as hyangyak with Korea's traditional gye, or cooperative association. According to the Hyangyak jeolmok (Hyangyak Regulations), each myeon (sub-district) at the time set up such a hall to hold hyangyak assemblies and the hyangeumjurye, a communal wine-drinking rite reinforcing village etiquette, and this hall served the same purpose. Built in 1850, the first year of King Cheoljong, the building has a single-row floor plan, with a wooden-floored hall at its centre flanked by rooms on either side. The roof is a hip-and-gable roof forming the shape of the character 八 (eight) when seen from the side. The hall remained in use from its construction until the late Joseon period. While every other such hall elsewhere has since disappeared, this one alone has carried on the intentions of its founders and has been preserved and maintained to the present day. As the only free-standing hyangyak hall surviving in the Jeonnam region, it holds great significance.
