Misanhaksa Temple
미산학사 · 眉山學舍

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMisanhaksa was a private academy built to commemorate the virtue of Kim I-do (pen name Misan) and to train the next generation of scholars. Kim I-do was a disciple of Jang Heung-hyo (pen name Gyeongdang) and was so accomplished in scholarship that he earned the respect of the Confucian community. He trained his students according to the principle that 'without an academy, one's aspirations cannot be realised', devoting himself to the promotion of learning. Misanhaksa was built in 1670, the eleventh year of King Hyeonjong. It measures three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with an elaborate hip-and-gable roof forming the shape of the character 八 (eight) when seen from the side. Although the building has a simple floor plan, its large front hall is fitted with a railing and raised like a loft, giving it a very refined appearance. Hanging above the large hall are plaques inscribed 'Misanhaksa' and 'Samgyeongdang'.
