Standing Bronze Buddha held at Cheonghaksa Temple, Gangneung
강릉 청학사 소장 청동불입상 · 江陵 靑鶴寺 所藏 靑銅佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe head is covered in nabal, tight snail-shell curls, with a raised usnisha, the cranial protuberance symbolising enlightenment. The face is round, the ears comparatively large, and the features of the eyes, nose and mouth have largely worn away; the shoulders are narrow and slope downward. The hands form the abhaya and varada mudras, the gestures of fearlessness and wish-granting: the raised right hand is damaged, while the lowered left hand has blunted fingertips. The robe covers both shoulders, in the tonggyeon style, with U-shaped folds running from the neck down to the ankles. The pedestal has a small band of upward-facing lotus petals carved directly beneath the figure, below which is a larger band of eight downward-facing lotus petals, and at the very bottom an eight-lobed flower-shaped base; the underside of the pedestal is pierced through. The statue is black overall, with patches of greenish verdigris and dust, and when viewed from the side it leans forward by about five degrees. The legs are thin while the torso and head are thicker, giving the figure a stooped appearance.
