Suhyeonsa is a shrine enshrining the spirit tablet of Yeom Je-sin, a distinguished official of the late Goryeo period. It was founded in 1873, the tenth year of Emperor Gojong, by his descendants, the Paju Yeom clan of Boryeong, for the purpose of ancestral rites. Originally a wooden, tile-roofed complex comprising a shrine hall of three bays across the front and two bays at the side under a gable roof, together with a soteul-sammun (a three-bay gate with a raised central section), it was relocated and rebuilt at its present site after the original location was submerged by the Boryeong Dam reservoir. Yeom Je-sin held office in Yuan China during the late Goryeo period and also occupied key posts at home, making great contributions to the state, for which he was granted the title Buwongun (a princely title bestowed on meritorious subjects) of Gokseong.
