Jucheonseowon Confucian Academy
주천서원 · 朱川書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJucheonseowon is a Confucian academy honouring seven figures centred on Zhu Xi: Yeo Dae-rim, Ju Jam, Yi Hwang, Yi I, Kim Chung-rip and Kim Jung-jeong. It was first built in 1924 as a shrine of the Gwangsan Kim clan and named Jucheonsa. In 1975 it was certified by the head of Sungkyunkwan, the national Confucian academy, and raised to the status of a seowon (Confucian academy); it has since been repaired several times down to the present. The academy consists of a hongsalmun (a red gate with pointed spikes marking a site of veneration), an outer three-bay gate (oesammun), and a shrine hall. The shrine hall measures three bays across the front and one and a half bays at the side, its roof a gable roof shaped, when viewed from the side, like the Chinese character 人 (person). Ancestral rites are held here every year on the fifteenth day of the ninth lunar month.
