Yeongsan Kim Clan Sejang Stele
영산김씨세장비 · 永山金氏世葬碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele stands beside a road in Moak-ri village. It has the typical form of a stele body topped with a roof-shaped capstone, and on the front of the body is vertically carved the stele's title, Yu Joseon-guk Yeongsan Kim-ssi Sejangbi (the hereditary burial-ground stele of the Yeongsan Kim clan of the state of Joseon). In the spring of 1919, Kim Cheol, a twenty-third-generation descendant of the Yeongsan Kim clan, secretly entered the country from Shanghai, China, and wrote the inscription; after the March First Independence Movement, Kim Gwang-seop had it carved and the stele erected. During the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, Japanese police discovered the stele, hammered out the characters reading "Joseon-guk" (state of Joseon), toppled it and buried it; after Korea's liberation the Kim clan recovered it and re-erected it at this site. It is a rare stele that boldly proclaimed national sovereignty during the unsettled period of mass arrests that followed the March First Independence Movement. Beside it stands the Kim Cheol Memorial Stele, erected by the clan in 1984.
